A U.S. Air Force captain whose wife was Kentucky's female athlete of the year in 2007 has been killed in Afghanistan.

Capt. David Lyon, 28, of Sandpoint, Idaho, was killed Friday when a car bomb exploded near his convoy in Kabul.

Capt. Lyon, a 2008 Air Force Academy graduate, was serving in a combat advisory capacity with Afghan National Army commandos when he was killed, according to officials at Peterson Air Force Base. He was a member of the base's 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron.

Capt. Lyon was married to Dana Pounds-Lyon, a 2006 Air Force Academy graduate who was a star athlete at Lexington Christian Academy and later at the Westminster Academy in Florida.

Pounds was Kentucky's female athlete of the year in 2007, the same year that Lexington's Tyson Gay was the state's top male athlete.

Pounds played basketball and softball and threw the discus, but she had her greatest success throwing the javelin. At the Air Force Academy, she won the javelin title in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in both 2005 and 2006.

She participated in the Olympic Trials in the javelin throw in 2004 and 2008 but did not qualify.

Her husband also was a track and field athlete at the Air Force Academy. He was named to the National Strength and Conditioning Association all-star team.

Capt. Lyon was nearing the end of a yearlong deployment in Afghanistan at the time of his death. He had been scheduled to return home in February.
