Fayette notes: Jan. 1

The Community Action Council is seeking donations of the following items for homeless veterans in Bourbon, Fayette, Harrison, Jessamine and Nicholas counties:

Backpacks (new or gently used); personal hygiene items (new, trial size) including toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, shaving cream and disposable razors; white socks (new); 12-ounce bottles of water.

The deadline to donate items is Jan. 17. Drop off donations at any of these council locations:

Aviation museum free to veterans in January

The Aviation Museum of Kentucky, located at Blue Grass Airport, will offer free admission to veterans of all U.S. service branches during the month of January.

Exhibits include items from World War I and World War II, along with models and actual aircraft from these conflicts. Later periods, such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and current military aircraft are also represented as well as displays of civilian aircraft.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is also home to the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame, which includes a number of veterans and recognizes their aeronautical accomplishments. Coretta King awards to be presented Jan. 18

The Lexington Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will be presenting its ninth annual Coretta Scott King "Spirit of Ivy" Awards at a luncheon on Jan. 18. The awards are presented each year to outstanding individuals who embody King's strength and spirit.

The luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel. Tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children. No tickets will be sold at the door.

This year's honorees are: Community Leader — Therese Warrick, Sisters Road 2 Freedom; Connections — Kathy Stein, judge and former state senator; Creative and Performing Arts — Crystal Wilkinson, poet; Single Mother — Faith Calhoun, mother of Destiny Calhoun; Young Entrepreneur — Kourtesy Lee, Kourtesy's Cupcakes and More; Business Owner — Scherer Boyd, SAKS Art Gallery; Outstanding Educator — Janice Blythe, Berea College.
