EKU student killed in New Year's Day fight at Whitesburg bar

An Eastern Kentucky University student died and two other people were injured in a fight that began in a Whitesburg bar early New Year's Day.

Michael Shane Hogg, 25, of Whitesburg was pronounced dead by the Letcher County coroner. He was a senior at EKU, majoring in applied engineering management, said Marc Whitt, associate vice president of public relations. Police said Hogg was stabbed.

Kentucky State Police said they were called about an altercation outside Streetside Grill & Bar.

David Christopher Puckett, 23, was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. His condition was not available. Stacy Phillips, 23, of Thornton was treated at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital and released.

James R. Huffman, 24, of Pikeville was charged with murder and assault. Patrick Smith, 27, of Marrowbone was charged with complicity to commit murder, first-degree criminal mischief, carrying a concealed deadly weapon and tampering with physical evidence. Both were being held in the Letcher County Detention Center.

State police said their investigation was continuing.
