Liquor Barn near Louisville ordered to close; not affiliated with Lexington company

January 3, 2014

The Liquor Barn store on Shelby ville Road in Jefferson County's St. Matthews area is losing its license to operate and will have to close Jan. 27, but the store is not run by the same Lexington-based company operating other Liquor Barn stores in Kentucky.

The Courier-Journal reported that the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board ordered the store to close in a ruling issued Dec. 26. The ruling followed years of litigation initiated by Beverage Warehouse, a liquor store just across Shelbyville Road from Liquor Barn.

The Liquor Barn store has 30 days to appeal the ruling.

The state ABC agreed with Beverage Warehouse that Liquor Barn's license was issued in error in 2009. Beverage Warehouse had said in a lawsuit filed in 2009 that Liquor Barn, at 4301 Shelbyville Road, shouldn't have been allowed to open because it is within 700 feet of Beverage Warehouse, a violation of St. Matthews laws.
