Lexington warming centers open at least through Wednesday

January 8, 2014

Lexington has had daytime warming centers operating on special extended hours at the Dunbar Recreation Center, New Life Day Center and the Senior Citizen’s Center. That will continue through Wednesday. City officials said they will reevaluate the need for the extended hours after that.

As a standing policy, when temperatures are below freezing, the Hope Center Emergency Shelter for Men on West Loudon Avenue, Salvation Army Emergency Shelter for Women and Children on West Main Street and MASH Drop Inn Center for youth on West Third Street are open 24 hours a day for people seeking relief from the elements. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is delivering emergency blankets designed for short-term use to people who need them. To get one, call the sheriff’s department at (859) 252-1771.
