Carlisle Police Chief Darrell Layne is in the business of helping people, but now he and his family need assistance after a Wednesday night fire destroyed their two-story home.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known, but it is believed to have started in or near a breaker box, said Nicholas County Fire Chief Doug French. The house is on Bald Hill Road in the Barterville community, about six miles north of Carlisle.

Layne, who has been chief for four years, was the only one home when the fire was reported at 10:22 p.m. Wednesday. His wife and children were away; no one was hurt.

The scene was too hot to investigate thoroughly on Thursday, so a Kentucky State Police investigator might return on Friday, French said.

For information about helping the family, call city hall at (859) 289-3700.
