Celebration heralds the Chinese new year

The Kentucky Chinese American Association gets a jump on the Chinese new year — it starts Jan. 31 — with a celebration Saturday at the Lexington Opera House, 401 West Short Street. At 4:30 p.m., a holiday market will feature food, crafts and family activities. At 7, performances will include festival songs, dance and a martial arts presentation. Tickets are $15 to $50. Trip a light fantastic

The Luminosity Art Ball is 8 p.m. Saturday at 845 Angliana Avenue. The black-tie event will include a sneak peek at the large-scale Luminosity sculpture that will light up Triangle Park in February. The evening also will feature music by the Swells and A Lion Named Roar, hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Tickets are $100, $75 for Lexington Art League members.
