Laurel Co. sheriff: Beggar was drunk and lying about his situation

bestep@herald-leader.comJanuary 20, 2014

A London man begging for money to feed his children was intoxicated and doesn't have any kids, Laurel County Sheriff John Root said in a news release.

Deputy Larry Parrott charged Ryan Hall, 20, with public intoxication after the incident, according to the news release.

Hall was standing beside the southbound ramp of Interstate 75 at exit 29 in southern Laurel County on Sunday afternoon with a sign that read, "stranded trying to feed two kids — anything helps."

When Parrott checked, he found Hall was intoxicated. Hall admitted drinking cough syrup and smoking marijuana, according to the news release.

Parrott also learned that Hall doesn't have children and was not stranded and that a friend had dropped him off to try to get donations from motorists, according to Root.
