Where to see Oscar-nominated films in Lexington

If you haven't seen the movies that were nominated for Oscars last week and you want to, you have a marathon month or so ahead of you before winners are announced March 2.

Here's a guide to the major-category nominees that you can see in theaters or on DVD this weekend, beginning Jan. 24. Major nominations also are listed. Note that studios sometimes will re-release nominated films, which often will show up at discount theaters.


These films are in Lexington theaters this weekend. Check the movie guides for show times and theaters.

American Hustle (picture; director; actor, Christian Bale; actress, Amy Adams; supporting actor, Bradley Cooper; supporting actress, Jennifer Lawrence; original screenplay).

August: Osage County (actress, Meryl Streep; supporting actress, Julia Roberts).

Dallas Buyers Club (picture; actor, Matthew McConaughey; supporting actor, Jared Leto; original screenplay). Due on DVD on Feb. 4.

Despicable Me 2 (animated feature). Also on DVD, Blu-ray, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes.

Frozen (animated feature). Due on DVD on March 18.

Gravity (picture; director; actress, Sandra Bullock). Due on DVD on Feb. 25.

Her (picture; original screenplay).

Nebraska (picture; director; actor, Bruce Dern; supporting actress, June Squibb; original screenplay).

12 Years a Slave (picture; director; actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor; supporting actor, Michael Fassbender; supporting actress, Lupita Nyong'o; adapted screenplay). Due on DVD on March 4.

The Wolf of Wall Street (picture; director; actor, Leonardo DiCaprio; supporting actor, Jonah Hill; adapted screenplay).

Captain Phillips (picture; supporting actor, Barkhad Abdi; adapted screenplay). Available on DVD, Amazon Instant Video and iTunes.

The Croods (animated feature). On DVD, Blu-ray, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix DVD, iTunes.

Cutie and the Boxer (documentary feature). Available on Amazon Instant Video and iTunes. Due on DVD on Feb. 4.

Dirty Wars (documentary feature). On DVD, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes.

Ernest & Celestine (animated feature). Available as an import DVD.

The Square (documentary feature). On Netflix.

20 Feet From Stardom (documentary feature). On DVD, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes.


These movies are scheduled to open in wider release soon, but it's not known whether they will arrive in Lexington before the Oscars. They are not playing anywhere in the region currently.

The Wind Rises (animated feature). A wider release is planned for the Japanese movie beginning Feb. 21.


This film is no longer in Lexington and is not scheduled to arrive on DVD until after the Oscars. If you haven't seen it, you might be out of luck. However, check listings for theaters in Louisville and Cincinnati.

Philomena (picture; actress, Judi Dench; adapted screenplay). Due on DVD on March 4.
