Fire destroys house on Winthrop Drive in Lexington

Fire destroyed a two-story home early Thursday morning on Winthrop Drive in Lexington.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., firefighters who had been battling the blaze evacuated the building and were maintaining a defensive position to keep the blaze from spreading.

In addition to crews on the ground, firefighters used a ladder truck to pour water on the building.

Emergency crews were dispatched to 3932 Winthrop Drive about 6:40 a.m.

Commanders twice ordered firefighters to withdraw from the house, warning at one point that brick veneer on one side of the house was leaning and might fall.
