Fire destroys home of family whose repurposed furniture sales benefit Haitian mission

A fire in Nicholasville early Sunday morning destroyed the house of a family whose repurposed home-goods charity, Repurposed Soul, aided a mission in Haiti.

Steve and Andrea Kohlman's house might be a total loss, Steve Kohlman said Monday. His wife, Andrea, a nurse, was at a wedding in Florida at the time, but Steve, the couple's two young daughters and their pets all escaped unharmed.

Steve Kohlman said he lost some family items of sentimental value, but he particularly feels the loss of his garage, where he took thrift-store finds and fixed them up for resale.

Proceeds from the refinished furniture, sold at garage sales, charity stores and via ads, go to the Waves of Mercy mission in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. The mission provides medical care, church, schooling and nutrition.

Although the cause of the fire has not been established, a faulty outside electrical box is suspected.

The Kohlmans are staying with family near their house.

The couple will "absolutely" continue with Repurposed Soul, Kohlman said. He also said he appreciated the community response to the family's plight.

"The community has been amazing," he said. "We've got plenty of clothes, we've got plenty of food. If people would like to help us more in the long term, any kind of gift cards are fine. They don't have to be a high gift amount."

Gift cards may be sent to 100 Bernie Trail, Nicholasville, Ky., 40356.
