UK softball: Nunley tosses no-hitter in season opener

University of Kentucky sophomore pitcher Kelsey Nunley tossed the first no-hitter of her collegiate career, while the Wildcat offense opened the season with 20 hits, including three home runs, en route to a 6-0 victory over Santa Clara and 10-0 victory over Long Beach State on Thursday in the 49er Softball Complex in Long Beach, Calif.

Nunley struck out a career-high 11 batters and allowed only two to reach base. In one stretch she retired 15 straight batters while throwing the 10th no-hitter in school history.

Junior catcher Griffin Joiner hit two homers against Santa Clara and sophomore shortstop Christian Stokes had three hits.

In the second game Lauren Cumbess threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. Ansley Smith hit a homer and Maisie Steed had two hits, knocking in two runs and scoring twice.
