Kobe's Back headed for Rebel Stakes

Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - San Vicente Stakes winner Kobe's Back will most likely make his next start on March 15 in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

Trainer John Sadler reiterated Thursday that the 3-year-old is being pointed to a start in the 1 1/16-mile Rebel in Arkansas.

"We'll look at maybe the Rebel," Sadler initially said after the 5 1/2-length San Vicente victory. There are a lot of 3-year-old races, but we wanted to get a good one at home in good weather first, then we're going to look at a race with (Kentucky Derby) points for him in the next one."

The Rebel, which leads into the $1 million Arkansas Derby on April 12, awards 50 points to the winning thoroughbred as a part of the Kentucky Derby points system.

Kobe's Back has two wins in four starts and $200,250.

The gray 3-year-old opened his career at Hollywood Park by winning the 5 1/2- furlong Willard Proctor Stakes on June 15. As the 9-10 favorite, he was second in the Hollywood Prevue in November, but finished 10th the next month in the CashCall Futurity after clipping heels.

"I've said all along that he's had three bad starts," said Lee Searing of C R K Stable, "he won the first one, got hammered in the second and we never had a chance out in the 12 hole last out. So finally, all the work John has put in and the right rider (has made the difference)."

The colt won the seven-furlong San Vicente by closing from last in the six- horse field.
