Couple, child found dead in creek in Whitley

A married couple and their 2-year-old child were found dead inside a submerged vehicle in Whitley County Saturday morning.

The bodies of Shannon L. Kier, 39, Susan Kay Kier, 29, and their son Lee Isaac Patrick Kier, all of Jacksboro, Tenn., were found inside a Chevrolet Impala that was found in Jellico Creek off Newman Campbell Road in Williamsburg at about 9:30 a.m., said Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley.

Croley said there had been flash flooding in the area after about 2 to 3 inches of rain fell Thursday night.

On Friday, the Kiers had been on their way to visit family members who live about a mile to a mile and a half from where the car was found, but they never arrived.

Croley said there were no witnesses to the wreck, so it is unclear what happened and what time the car went into the creek.

He said autopsies will be done to determine the cause of death, but he believes the family drowned. Foul play is not suspected.

Croley said Shannon Kier is originally from Whitley County.
