Spelling bee winner heads to state bee

Julia Radhakrishnan, an 8th grader at Sphinx Academy, won the Fayette County Spelling Bee Feb. 13 at the Fayette County Cooperative Extension Office. Julia competed against 52 others from public, private, parochial and home schools across Fayette County and was awarded a trophy and $75.

Fayette County Farm Bureau sponsored the county-wide spelling bee for all students in grades four through eight.

Second place was awarded to Caleb Hamlyn, a 7th grader from Lexington Traditional Magnet School, and third place went to Gus Carlson, an 8th grader from Winburn Middle School. Both received medallions and cash prizes.

Julia will represent Fayette County at the Kentucky Derby Festival State Spelling Bee on March 15 in Louisville.
