It wasn't easy, but Lexington Christian Academy's girls beat winless Tates Creek 62-45 in the 43rd District tournament high school basketball opener Monday night at Paul Laurence Dunbar.

LCA swept the Commodores 62-42 and 68-43 during the regular season, but the win-or-go-home meeting was much tougher.

Tates Creek had several chances to reduce the deficit to less than 10 points in the fourth quarter before LCA finally pulled away.

Katelin Bundy led the Eagles with 25 points, including six three-pointers. The senior guard had 21 points and five threes in the first half.

Holly Huellemeier, a 5-11 senior, had 24 points and 13 rebounds. She had 11 points and six rebounds in the second half to help hold off Tates Creek.

"It seemed like whenever Tates Creek made a run, Katelin would stick one in, or Holly would get a big rebound and putback," LCA Coach Nick Cann said. "They had some big moments for us."

Tates Creek freshman guard J'Lyn Martin had 20 points, including four threes.

Haley Blackburn had eight points and six rebounds. Myra Brown also had eight points, and Kiauri Shannon added seven points and eight rebounds.

Tates Creek finished the season 0-30, but Cann saluted Coach Tina Winn's team.

"I've seen them play several times this year and I've never seen them not play hard," Cann said.

"Tina's done a great job keeping them motivated, and they showed again tonight they never quit."

LCA advances to Wednesday's semifinals to face No. 6 Lafayette. Cann knows his Eagles face a huge challenge.

"We've got to play really well and shoot really well, and hope they miss a few shots," he said.

"The No. 1 thing for us will be to keep them off the boards. If they shoot the ball 20 more times than us, we won't have a chance."
