Region basketball tournament highlights: No. 11 Sacred Heart rolls over No. 19 Eastern

Sacred Heart, which led 36-34 at halftime, extended that lead to eight by the end of the third quarter opened the fourth on a 13-3 run to roll to an 80-64 win at home over Eastern in the 7th Region quarterfinals.

The Valkyries, 11th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, got double-doubles from both its stars. Raven Merriweather had 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, and DaiJia Ruffin had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Gretchen Samsel added 17 points, including five three-pointers.

The 19th-rated Lady Eagles were led by Madison Raque, who hit five threes and finished with 28 points.

Powell County 88, Jackson City 64 (14th): Sophomore Destiny Peck scored 39 points for the Lady Pirates, who opened the game at Leslie County on a 21-8 run.

No. 20 Newport Central Catholic 65, Conner 55 (9th): Nicole Kiernan scored 22 points and the Thoroughbreds improved to 27-4 with a win at Northern Kentucky.

Mercy 61, Iroquois 42 (6th): Hannah Bewley scored a game-high 19 points in the Jaguars' win at home.

Perry County Central 71, Knott County Central 36 (14th): Kayla Rankin scored 20 points and the Lady Commodores dominated from the start at Leslie County.

No. 10 Ballard 61, Central 47 (7th): Javonna Layfield led the Bruins with 22 points.
