An increase in fines for those who park illegally in handicapped parking spaces will take effect April 7.

Lexington's Urban County Council passed an ordinance two weeks ago that would increase the fines from $15 to $250. But council did not realize that the ordinance took effect immediately.

Council voted Thursday to give a 60-day grace period so people will have notice before the fine is increased.
