A retired priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington will oversee the diocese until the pope names a new bishop for the diocese.

The College of Consultors, a standing body of priests which elects administrators to lead dioceses without bishops, appointed the Rev. Robert H. Nieberding on Friday, according to a news release from the diocese.

Lexington's former Roman Catholic leader, Bishop Ronald W. Gainer, was installed as bishop of Harrisburg, Pa., on Wednesday.

Nieberding, 81, is the former pastor of Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Lexington and a former principal of Lexington Catholic High School. He previously served as diocesan administrator from May 2002 to Feb. 22, 2003.
