Kentucky Derby notes: California Chrome the favorite in final Future Wager pool

March 24, 2014

Churchill Downs handicapper Mike Battaglia made California Chrome a narrow favorite at 5-1 over Cairo Prince (6-1) in his morning line odds for the final Kentucky Derby futures pool.

Those individual horses were rated just above "all others," which opens at 8-1.

Wagering on Pool 4 will open at noon Thursday and conclude at 6 p.m. Saturday ahead of the Grade I Florida Derby and and Grade II Louisiana Derby. A third Derby prep — the UAE Derby at Dubai's Meydan Racecourse — will be run earlier in the day.

Trained by Art Sherman, California Chrome collected his third consecutive win with a 7¼-length triumph in the Grade II San Felipe at Santa Anita on March 8. The California-bred colt will run next in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 5.

■ Dance With Fate, runner-up in the Grade III El Camino Real Statkes at Golden Gate Fields, was one of 10 horses nominated late to the Triple Crown ahead of last Saturday's deadline.

Harry's Holiday, which finished a close second to We Miss Artie in Saturday's Grade III Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park, was also a late nominee.
