Vandy wins 9-3 to even series with UK

Fifth-ranked Vanderbilt struck for three runs in the first inning, and Jared Miller took a no-hitter into the fifth as the Commodores beat Kentucky 9-3 on Saturday to even the series in Nashville.

The deciding game of the three-game series is Sunday at 2 p.m.

Vandy (22-6, 4-4 Southeastern Conference) scored five runs over the first three innings, including a two-run homer by Dansby Swanson in the first inning.

Kentucky starter Chandler Shepherd (5-1), suffered his first career SEC loss, allowing career highs in hits (11) and runs (seven) in six innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Kentucky (19-8, 4-4) ended Miller's no-hit bid on Austin Cousino's two-out bunt single in the fifth inning. Max Kuhn added an RBI single. UK scored three runs — only one earned — in an inning that included a throwing error by Miller (6-1), two hit batters and a wild pitch.

UK managed just four hits in the game, all singles.
