Authorities said a man was killed by a train in Laurel County when he remained on the tracks even after the train sounded its whistle.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root identified the victim as Leif Sandkulla, 35, of the Lily community.

Deputies said Sandkulla was hit about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on the CSX tracks off Robinson Creek Road, about nine miles south of London.

Officers said a man was walking along the tracks when a northbound train approached.

Deputies said the train sounded its whistle, "but for unknown reasons, the subject remained on the tracks and was struck by the train, causing fatal injuries."

An investigation is continuing.
