A 22-year-old man died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital Sunday night after falling into a large private pond in Fayette County, authorities said.

The Fayette County Coroner's office identified the victim as Ubong Joseph David of Lexington. The cause of death was listed as drowning.

Lexington police Lt. Eddie Hart said officers went to the 1800 block of Walnut Hill Road, off Old Richmond Road, just before 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible drowning at a pond there.

Crews from the Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency Services pulled David from the one-acre pond 20 to 30 minutes after David disappeared underwater, according to Hart.

Police units escorted the ambulance on the drive to UK, but the victim could not be revived, Hart said.

David was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 7 p.m., according to the coroner's office.

Police said the victim and a friend were in a boat on the pond, with other friends on the bank.

"The victim stood up in the boat, lost his balance and fell into the water," Hart said.

The other person who was in the boat jumped into the pond to help, but David disappeared below the surface, police said. Hart said it was unclear whether he knew how to swim.

The friend remained in the water for some time trying to find David, suffering mild hypothermia himself, Hart said.

The case is being investigated as an accident, according the coroner's office.
