Smashing: Heather Saxon dresses for Keeneland's many settings

Herald-Leader fashion writerApril 11, 2014

Heather Saxon walked the grounds of Keeneland on Wednesday morning in a pair of elegant cut-out heels. Across bricked pathways, climbing flights of stairs to a balcony with a view of the track, she never missed a step.

As director of digital marketing at Keeneland, Saxon has a winning style, which can be a challenge for one whose job can take her from the press box to the horse barns during any given day.

The office staff at the Thoroughbred race track usually has an arsenal of outerwear ready for fickle Central Kentucky weather.

"We usually all have rain jackets," said Saxon, "because you never know what the weather is going to be."

Back in her office, Saxon reveals a pair of fashion riding boots near her desk. "I usually keep those boots in my car or in the office at all times because you never know when you're going to run out to the barns to take a photo or get a quote," she said.

But as someone who has contact with the public as well as staff, Saxon's look is as stylish as it is functional.

A classic belted black sheath from the Keeneland Gift Shop is accented with a versatile tailored jacket from Ann Taylor, one of Saxon's go-to retailers.

"I wear a lot of Ann Taylor," she said. "I like more structured type clothes, and they seem to have that style."

One of her favorite accessories is a ring with an onyx-colored stone, a birthday gift more than 10 years ago. "I wear it all the time. And now everybody says that it looks like Kate Middleton's," she said with a laugh. "But I was wearing it before she got married."

Another treasured item is her Michael Kors iPad bag. "I'm lost without this," she says. "I'm the digital marketing manager, so I always have to be connected."

Saxon reveals the bag's contents, in addition to her iPad: "It has tons of pockets. So I store my cellphone in here, my credentials, my key fob, USBs, Keeneland cards."

Then she pulls out another of her fashion essentials: Burt's Bees lip balm. "I have those with me all the time," she said. The perfect no-nonsense beauty essential for a woman with no time to waste.
