A group of University of Kentucky students are continuing their fight against the administration's decision to outsource the school's dining services. On Monday, about five UK-United Students Against Sweatshops held a protest outside the Administration Building before holding a sit-in at UK President Eli Capilouto's office.
UK senior Brock Meade said they are particularly concerned that UK will choose Sodexo, a multi-national food services company that has switched some of its full-time food service workers to part-time status due to the national health care law.
UK decided to privatize earlier this year but has not yet picked a vendor. However, a large company is required because the proposed contract will require the vendor to pay for new dining facilities on campus.
"It's up to President Capilouto whether our next action is a protest or a celebration," Meade said.
The students spent the afternoon at Capilouto's office without incident. He emerged briefly, shook hands with the protesters, and left without comment.
Meade said the group is planning a larger demonstration on May 1 at the Wildcat Alumni Plaza.
