Sharon Thompson: New 'fresh, quick, casual' Pita Social is the first of 2

Pita Social, a new restaurant that calls itself "fresh, quick, casual," is open in Brighton Place next to Ramsey's Diner.

The menu offers house-made pitas, hummus, falafel, salads, and freshly squeezed juice. Breakfast pitas are available all day.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Call (859) 303-8089.

A second Pita Social is planned for Fayette Mall.

■ Hugo Gonzalez is serving Mexican specialties at the new La Cabana, 1414 Bryan Avenue. One of the best-sellers is "the Acapulco," a steak and shrimp dish. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Call (859) 388-2011.

Furlongs, 130 West Tiverton Way, will have a crawfish boil and parking-lot party Saturday. The band Shades of Grass will entertain beginning at 3 p.m. The menu also includes jambalaya and hurricanes. Call (859) 913-5611.

■ John Crissman is hosting an open mike Saturday for children ages 13 and younger at Bakery Blessings & Bookstore @ the Bar, 1999 Harrodsburg Road. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. The bakery is accepting orders for pies for Derby Day and graduation cakes. Call (859) 554-6044.

Azur Restaurant, 3070 Lakecrest Circle, will hold its annual Derby kickoff party, called Bourbon, Bets and Cigars, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Whiskeys from Louisville's Michter's distillery will be served with each of the four courses, which include fried alligator tail, wild boar sliders, caramel corn-crusted pork belly, and venison sausage.

Don Godell cigars, imported from the Dominican Republic by Ron Blake, will be available. National racing analyst Ellis Starr will help handicap guests' Oak and Derby picks.

■ The chefs at Coba Cocina, 2041 Richmond Road, are offering a few traditional mesoamerican dishes. Included are tomatillo-cucumber gazpacho, red chile Caesar salad, cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork), elote (Mexican corn on the cob) and Mayan hot chocolate cheesecake.
