Legends offer fans chance to take on Jose Canseco in home run derby

Herald-Leader Staff ReportApril 24, 2014

Fans of the Lexington Legends will have a chance to compete in a home run derby against former major league home run king Jose Canseco, who visits Whitaker Bank Ballpark on July 11.

Canseco, who hit 462 home runs in a major league career marked with accomplishment and controversy, will make an appearance before the Legends game against Hagerstown that night.

Canseco will compete in the home run derby with eight fans, whose names will be chosen in a drawing. There will also be an autograph session during the game. Details on the drawing will be announced later.

Canseco gained fame as one of the Oakland A's "Bash Brothers," along with Mark McGwire, in the 1980s. He led the American League with 42 homers and 124 RBI in 1988 and 44 homers in 1991. He also stole 200 bases in his major league career, including 40 in 1988, when he became the first player in MLB history to hit at least 40 home runs and steal at least 40 bases in the same season. He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1986 and the AL Most Valuable Player in 1988. Canseco retired in 2001.

Canseco's book, Juiced, released in 2005, detailed his longtime use of steroids, and it named other baseball stars as users.
