Bank robbery, attempted holdup of check-cashing outlet leads to police search

A Lexington bank was robbed Wednesday morning about 30 minutes after an attempted robbery at a check-cashing outlet, police said.

No arrests had been made, and police were investigating the possibility that the same people were involved, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

The robbers' descriptions from the two cases were similar, she said.

Police examined surveillance video from the bank early Wednesday afternoon in hopes of identifying suspects.

Roberts said two men entered the People's Exchange Bank at 901 Richmond Road about 11:20 a.m., displayed a gun and demanded money. They then ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash, she said.

About 30 minutes earlier, two men with a gun had tried to rob the Cash Advance Center of Kentucky at 1328 Versailles Road, Roberts said. Their attempt failed, however, because the door of the business was locked from the inside.

In both cases, the men wore dark hoodies, Roberts said.

Two men can be seen wearing hoodies and masks over their faces in a black and white photo that was released Wednesday afternoon by police.

A more detailed description of one of the bank robbers was obtained, Roberts said. He was described as about 5 foot 10 with a medium build, wearing a gray hoodie and with a bandanna over his face.

No escape vehicle was seen at the People's Exchange Bank. But the men in the attempted robbery at the check-cashing outlet were thought to have driven away in a white car, Roberts said.
