Herald-Leader Staff ReportMay 6, 2014

Andrew Evans' throw of 217 feet, 9 inches to win the Tennessee Challenge topped all American and NCAA tosses this year.

Kentucky's Andrew Evans was named National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The senior discus thrower posted the fifth-best throw in NCAA history last Saturday. Evans recorded an American and NCAA-leading throw of 217 feet, 9 inches to win at the Tennessee Challenge.

The throw also ranks No. 3 in the world this year.

His second-best attempt of the day also ranked ninth all-time at 216 feet, 8 inches.

Evans broke 2008 NCAA Discus Champion Rashaud Scott's school record of 216 feet, 2 inches.

Next up for Evans is the SEC Championships, which will be held at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex from May 15-18. The discus will be contested on May 17.

Evans was the second Kentucky track and field star to be named National Athlete of the Week this year. Dezerea Bryant, the NCAA Indoor 200-meter champ, also earned the honor.
