UK softball to open SEC Tournament against Mississippi State

    Thursday: No. 3 Missouri vs. No. 6 LSU, 11 a.m.

    Thursday: No. 2 Tennessee vs. UK-Mississippi State winner, 1:30 p.m.

    Thursday: No. 4 Florida vs. No. 5 Georgia, 4 p.m.

    Thursday: No. 1 Alabama vs. South Carolina-Auburn winner, 6:30 p.m.

    Friday: Semifinals at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

    Saturday: Championship, 8 p.m.

The No. 7-seeded Kentucky softball team will face 10th-seeded Mississippi State on Wednesday in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Columbia, S.C.

The game, which opens the tournament, will be shown live on ESPNU at 4 p.m.

If Kentucky (41-14) defeats Mississippi State (38-18), it will face No. 2 seed Tennessee on Thursday in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.

Kentucky's win total this season set a school record. UK went 13-11 in the SEC, its fourth consecutive winning season in the league under Coach Rachel Lawson. Prior to her arrival, UK had just one winning season in the SEC.

Senior outfielder Emily Gaines is Kentucky's top hitter with a .356 average, including seven doubles, six homers and 35 RBI. Senior pitcher/infielder Lauren Cumbess is batting .342 with 10 doubles, one triple, eight homers and 34 RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Nunley is UK's top pitcher with a 21-7 record.

Nunley, UK sophomore Nikki Sagermann and UK junior Griffin Joiner were voted to the All-SEC team by league coaches Tuesday.
