A Knox County man was shot and killed early Friday during a struggle after two intruders broke into his home, according to a news release from Kentucky State Police.

State police identified the man who was shot as Donald Mills, 29, of Scalf.

The preliminary investigation indicates two armed men claiming to be police officers forced their way through the front door of Mills' home, according to the release.

Mills struggled with one of the intruders, who shot him. Mills' wife took him to the Knox County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Jacobs said police are investigating the motive for the attack on Mills, but do not believe he was targeted randomly.

The intruders searched Mills' house before leaving in a maroon, 4-door Ford F-150 pickup truck with tinted windows, chrome steps and a chrome push bar on the front.

State police received a call to help with the case at 5:19 a.m.

Police had not identified the assailants as of Friday afternoon.
