Two Hilltoppers drafted; ex-Cats Cobble and Rumph get free-agent deals

May 10, 2014

Western Kentucky football went 2-for-4 the final day of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

Hilltoppers linebacker Andrew Jackson and safety Jonathan Dowling were drafted, while running back Antonio Andrews and linebacker Xavius Boyd were not.

Jackson went off the board first when the Indianapolis Colts took him in the sixth round with the 203rd overall pick. The Colts already have one former Hilltopper on their roster — tight end Jack Doyle.

"We knew about him (for) a couple of years," Colts GM Ryan Grigson said of Jackson. "All (his) grades were high. He's a really tough, hard-nosed player. ... You have to stop the run, and he's tailor-made to stop the run."

Jackson was first-team All Sun Belt in 2011 and 2012 and second-team in 2013.

The Oakland Raiders took Dowling, a junior who has been a two-time first-team Sun Belt selection, in the seventh round with the 247th overall pick. He led the nation in forced fumbles with six.

Andrews, the 2009 Mr. Football winner at Fort Campbell, tweeted that he'll sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans. He led the nation in all-purpose yards this past season. Boyd is expected to sign as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens.

Cobble, Rumph get deals

The Denver Post reported that Kentucky defensive tackle Mister Cobble will sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Broncos. Donte Rumph, another UK defensive tackle, will sign with the Atlanta Falcons.

Troy quarterback Corey Robinson, Kentucky's Mr. Football in 2007 at Lone Oak, agreed to a free-agent contract with Cleveland.
