A 19-year-old man described as an excellent swimmer drowned Sunday afternoon at Green River Lake during a church outing, the Taylor County coroner's office said.

Coroner Terry Dabney identified the victim as Jose Zambrano of Lebanon.

Dabney said Zambrano jumped into the water to retrieve some children's floating toys.

"He was in 22 feet of water, about 50 feet from the bank, when he got into trouble," Dabney said.

The coroner said it was unclear what happened.

"It could have been cramps; he had just eaten lunch," Dabney said. "He was 19 years old; an excellent swimmer; a picture of health. It's a tragedy."

The church group, which included Zambrano's mother and father, was at the lake for a baptismal service and picnic, officials said.

His body was recovered about 5 p.m.
