Someone tried to steal a truckload of shingles from a Lexington business early Monday morning, but the vehicle overturned as the driver tried to make a getaway.

Police Lt. Mark Brand said it happened about 3 a.m. at Shelter Distribution, a roofing supply company on Baker Court.

The thief used a forklift to load several pallets of shingles onto a flatbed truck owned by the company, and then he tried to drive way, according to Brand.

He cargo of shingles apparently shifted, causing the truck to roll onto its side, police said.

The thief then fled before officers arrived, Brand said.
