Paul Laurence Dunbar held on to beat host Lafayette 5-3 in the first round of the 43rd District baseball tournament Monday night.

Dunbar advanced to face No. 1 Tates Creek in Tuesday's second semifinal. No. 10 Lexington Catholic plays Lexington Christian in the first semifinal at 6 p.m.

Dunbar took a 3-0 lead in the third thanks to consecutive singles by Jacob Crouch, Jack Cress and Garrett Bugg, a pair of Lafayette errors, and Nicky Avioli's sacrifice fly.

Connor McHugh had a run-scoring single in the sixth. McHugh also picked up the pitching win. The senior right-hander started and worked into the sixth.

Lafayette's Kylan Nelson hit a solo homer in the sixth, and the Generals pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs.

But Dunbar ace Aaron Ochsenbein, who figures to get the start against Tates Creek, came on to get the final out — a strikeout — against Lafayette.
