Designed for speed

Local architects will compete at the 2014 Design Slam from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at West Sixth Brewing, 501 West Sixth Street.

Teams from Lexington architecture firms will have one hour to complete a design for High Street and Broadway across from Rupp Arena. The whole design process will be projected from team computers to large screens, and event-goers may cheer for their favorites and cast votes.

Admission is $10 and includes a custom pint glass, a sketchbook and a vote for your favorite design. Additional votes are $1 each. Proceeds will benefit Lexington Habitat for Humanity, Fayette Alliance and AIA East Kentucky.

Be prepared to pedal

For fun and fitness, take a spin around town at the Bike Lexington Family Fun Ride on Saturday. Free activities start at 8 a.m. at Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza, Main Street and South Limestone. A 10-mile Fun Ride starts promptly at 10 a.m. Registration is free. Go to for more info.

A free flight of fancy

At Jacobson Park, 4001 Athens- Boonesboro Road, the kid-focused Free Friday Flicks will show Disney's animated feature Planes (2013), about a cropduster that competes in an international aerial race. Festivities begin at 7 p.m., with the movie at dusk.
