Four Roses' annual limited-edition single-barrel bourbon will hit the shelves any day now. Fans of Four Roses know that to get one of about 5,000 bottles in this annual release, they can't let any grass grow under their feet.
"This year's limited-edition single-barrel is a tribute to the loyal following we are so fortunate to have," said master distiller Jim Rutledge. "This bourbon went into the barrel and was put away at a time when Four Roses had just returned to the States, and it's remarkable to see how far we've come as a company since then."
This year's version is an 11-year-old "OESF," meaning it was produced at Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg from a mashbill of 75 percent corn, 20 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley; it's a straight bourbon; and it uses the F strain of yeast, which gives a minty, fruity flavor, according to Four Roses.
The distillery famously uses two mashbills and five yeast strains to create 10 different distillates.
The 2014 single-barrel is barrel-strength, uncut and non-chill-filtered with a proof ranging from 108.3 to 127.6. the distillery said, and it has aromas of clove and fruit, toffee and brown sugar. It has flavors of creamy mint, ripe cherries, vanilla and pear, with a long smooth finish of candied fruit and sweetened oak, according to the news release.
This year, the bottle features a special toast from a fan, submitted in a contest during the brand's 125th anniversary celebration last year. The toast by Frank Wheatley of Louisville was the winner: "If I could age like bourbon, I wouldn't mind getting old."
