School officials have announced two public forums on redistricting.

    When: 6 to 8 p.m. June 26.

Where: Bryan Station High School gymnasium, 201 Eastin Road.

Another meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. July 10 in the gym at Lafayette High School, 401 Reed Lane.

The Fayette County Public Schools board will be asked this month to take the next step toward building an approximately $18.9 million elementary school that's scheduled to open in 2016.

The school, to be named later, is in a rapidly developing residential area east of Interstate 75 in Lexington.

On June 23, the school board will be asked to approve design development documents prepared by Moody-Nolan Architects, an Ohio-based firm with an office in Northern Kentucky. The plans are subject to the approval of the Kentucky Department of Education, according to documents attached to a meeting agenda.

The new 650-student elementary school is to be built on 15 acres at 1150 Passage Mound Way and will be about 73,000 square feet. The site backs up to I-75 and will be fronted by a part of Passage Mound Way yet to be built, district spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said.

When the school district bought the property, it was a portion of a large tract of land addressed as 1281 Deer Haven Lane. Now that the site has been identified for the school, it has been given its own address.

The district will pay construction costs by selling bonds, which is essentially how government agencies borrow money, Deffendall said.

The total project is expected to cost $18.9 million, including land, the architect fees, construction, furniture, landscaping and "everything so that we are ready to open the doors," she said.

Passage Mound Way is now served by Yates Elementary. Nearby Liberty and Athens-Chilesburg elementary schools are over capacity and are the district's two largest elementary schools, with 834 and 767 students each, respectively.

A committee has been established to recommend new school boundaries to the school board in anticipation of the 2016 opening of the Passage Mound elementary school, a new elementary school on Georgetown Road scheduled to open in 2016, and a new high school scheduled to open on Winchester Road in 2017.

That redistricting committee will meet through at least December. Decisions about new school attendance zones aren't expected until early 2015.
