The Greer Cos. real estate development firm said Thursday that construction has started on the Hampton Inn hotel at Nicholasville Road and Southland Drive.

Lexington-based Greer Cos.' NorthStar Hospitality division oversees the operation of its Hilton, Marriott and Intercontinental Hotel Group franchises, the company said in a news release.

The building should take about a year to complete, the news release said.

NorthStar's Hampton Inn in Shelby County was named the best hotel in Shelby County from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, its Williamsburg hotel was honored with the Hampton Lighthouse Award, given exclusively to the top 5 percent of hotels in the brand.

The Nicholasville Road hotel was announced in August 2012. The Greer Cos. is a commercial real estate development firm that is a franchisee of dining and hotel chains, including Cheddar's Casual Café. It also operates the Coba Cocina restaurant on Richmond Road.
