Lexington Sister Cities program wins top honor

June 15, 2014

Lexington Sister Cities has won Sister Cities' top award for best overall program for a city of 100,001 to 300,000 residents.

The Lexington Sister Cities program, which started in 1957, was selected for its outstanding accomplishments and programming in 2013.

Some of that programming included 71 students participating in a high school exchange program — including 43 students from Lexington and 29 from other sister cities. A delegation of 35 people from Lexington visited County Kildare in Ireland to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the two cities participating in the Sister Cities program. There also was an exchange of arborists from Lexington and County Kildare in September and October.

Sister Cities also participates in the city's other international events including the St. Patrick's Day Festival, Kentucky League of Cities Convention and One World Film Festival, and it hosted the Kentucky Sister Cities state meeting.
