Two people were taken to hospitals after a three-vehicle crash Monday morning that snarled rush-hour traffic in downtown Lexington.

One driver was trapped inside his vehicle for about 30 minutes.

The wreck occurred about 7:45 a.m. at West Third Street and North Broadway.

A silver pickup truck apparently collided head-on with a brightly decorated, old-style Volkswagen "bus" in the intersection. A small four-door sedan also was involved.

The man driving the VW was trapped for about 30 minutes until firefighters freed him using Jaws of Life equipment. His right foot was swathed in bandages as crews placed him on a stretcher and carried him to an ambulance.

A woman in the sedan also was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

All three vehicles were damaged extensively.

Police blocked off Third Street from South Upper to Broadway, and Broadway was closed between Fourth and Third streets while crews worked the crash.
