Tates Creek's Hairston, Henderson County's Duckworth share Mr. Baseball honors

Tates Creek senior shortstop Devin Hairston was named co-Mr. Baseball for the 2014 season by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Hairston shares the honor with Kaleb Duckworth of Henderson County.

Hairston, who has signed with Louisville, led top-ranked Tates Creek to its second consecutive 11th Region title this season.

He batted .408 with 42 runs and 25 RBI, and flashed a nifty glove on defense. As a junior Hairston hit .460 with 35 runs and 26 RBI.

Hairston was surprised by the news he was co- Mr. Baseball. "I wasn't expecting the award at all," he said. "It wasn't on my radar at all this season. The only thing I was focused on was doing everything I could to help my team get to the state tournament."

Hairston is the eighth Lexington player to earn Mr. Baseball honors, following Bryan Station's Ryne Combs (2012), Lexington Catholic's Ben Revere (2007), Lafayette's Chaz Roe (2005), Henry Clay's Collin Cowgill (2004), Paul Laurence Dunbar's Josh Ellis (2003), Lafayette's Austin Kearns (1998) and Henry Clay's Scott Hodges (1997).

"I'm definitely in good company," Hairston said.

Hairston will check in at Louisville on July 7 to start summer classes. He's excited about joining the Cardinals' program, which has reached the College World Series two years in a row.

"Hopefully I can be part of a team that gets there and wins some games, and maybe a championship," he said.

Duckworth, an outfielder who is headed to Western Kentucky, hit .447 this season with 40 runs, 35 RBI and seven homers. He was named Gatorade's player of the year in Kentucky a few weeks ago.

Tates Creek senior pitcher/designated hitter Tanner Hart was selected first-team all-state, along with Hairston and Lexington Catholic catcher Riley Jackson.

Luke Rouse of Tates Creek and Drew Schacht of Lexington Christian earned second-team honors. Tates Creek teamamtes Jordan Fucci and Blake Rose got honorable mention.
