The director of the Gluck Equine Research Center will not be reappointed to another six-year term despite a bid by the Gluck Foundation board to keep Dr. Mats Troedsson in place.

Troedsson, who has been chairman of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment's Veterinary Science Department since June 2008, agreed to stay on for 90 days while an interim is named and a search begins.

"I don't know what happened," Troedsson said. "I'm surprised. ... I think the Gluck Center is going in the right direction."

The Gluck Foundation board, chaired by Three Chimneys Farm president Case Clay, held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss Troedsson's situation. Nancy Cox, dean of the agriculture college, made the decision not to reappoint him. Cox told the board she conducted confidential interviews on Troedsson's tenure then asked for a committee to further review his job performance before she concluded that he would not be reappointed. The committee's report was not immediately available.

Most faculty chairs at the university serve only one term, she said.

One board member, Lisa Lourie, owner of Spy Coast Farm in Lexington, said by phone that she might withhold future financial assistance to the equine research institution in protest. Gluck's multimillion-dollar budget is more dependent than that of many other departments on outside funding, which is one of the board's main roles.

The board went into executive session over an objection from the media and against the advice of Tim West, the college director of business administrator and an attorney. West told the board he did not think they had proper grounds to close the meeting.

Board member Mike Meuser, an Lexington equine attorney, cited an exemption to Kentucky open-meeting statutes for consideration of personnel matters. But the board doesn't have hiring or firing authority and could not take any action on Troedsson.

Clay would not comment after the meeting on what was discussed.

The foundation board is appointed by the UK board of trustees.
