A 13-year-old boy who was taken to the hospital Monday night after being pulled from the pool at Transylvania University has died, the Fayette County Coroner's office said Tuesday morning.

The coroner's office did not release the victim's name, pending an autopsy.

He was 13, not 17 as previously reported.

There were conflicting reports about what happened. A university spokesman said the boy was attending a summer academic class in computer programming at Transy, according to the university.

Battalion Chief Joe Best of the Lexington Fire Department said emergency crews were called to the pool after a report that a boy had "struck his head" while diving. He said the injuries were life-threatening.

But Sallie Showalter, interim director of communications for Transylvania, said staff at the scene was not aware of any head injury or accident.

"He was simply unresponsive," she said.

Showalter said the boy was among a group of 13 students from the camp who were in the pool where it is 11 feet deep. Two lifeguards were on duty.

Crews were called to the pool, in the William T. Young Campus Center at North Broadway and Fourth Street, at 8:23 p.m. and arrived at 8:25 p.m., according to the fire department's dispatch website.
