Authorities are investigating the death of a 3-year-old Boyle County girl.

The child was unresponsive when she arrived at Danville's Ephraim McDowell Hospital about 8:30 Monday night, according to the Richmond Kentucky State Police post.

She was then flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday, state police said.

The child was identified as Alexa K. Raley of Danville.

State police did not describe the nature of her injuries, but a news release said an initial investigation indicated that she had been assaulted.

An autopsy is scheduled in Frankfort later Tuesday.

An investigation by the Richmond state police post and Danville police is continuing.
