The boy who died after becoming unresponsive at a Transylvania University swimming pool June 23 was Ricky Harris III, the Fayette County coroner's office said.

He was 13.

Services for Ricky Harris were held Friday at the First Baptist Church, 100 Clinton Street in Frankfort.

Authorities said the teen was attending a summer academic camp at Transy when he lost consciousness during a recreational swim at the university's William T. Young Campus Center. He was later pronounced dead at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

Ricky was a seventh-grader at the Bondurant Middle School in Frankfort, according to The State Journal newspaper.

Kristy Standifer, a language arts teacher at the school, told the Frankfort newspaper that Ricky was a hard worker who often stayed after class to put in extra study.

"Ricky was the kind of student any teacher would want ... He brought a great deal of happiness everywhere he went," Standifer told The State Journal.

Initial reports suggested that Ricky might have suffered an injury while diving, but police said surveillance video confirmed that no diving board was involved, and the coroner's office said later that he had drowned.
