Story magazine, a Lexington-based publication dedicated to celebrating the Bluegrass State and sharing the interesting and diverse experiences of Kentuckians, began an online fundraising campaign Tuesday.
Story is using the fundraising site Kickstarter.com to raise money to finance its two ventures outside of the magazine itself: a TV series, backStory, and a musical event, Story Sessions.
"The whole idea is to show the complete circle of what Kentucky is all about," said Story's founder and editor, Julie Wilson. "These amazing musicians and these people who we write about are all from Kentucky. It's all things you wouldn't realize happen in our own backyard."
BackStory, on Kentucky Educational Television, provides a behind-the-scenes look at how the magazine is put together.
Story Sessions connects musicians from various groups. The artists are all originally from Kentucky but have gone on to national acclaim. Story brings the artists together to write, produce and perform a song.
The publication seeks to raise $26,000 in the 30 days of its campaign. The money will finance two more episodes of the television series and the next musical event.
"We obviously are very appreciative of people who realize what we're trying to do," Wilson said. "We're still going very strong with the magazine. It's just these other new ventures have pushed us outside of our comfort zone financially, so we thought we'd try something new and different with the campaign."
