A 42-year-old man was killed and a woman was critically injured Wednesday in a pickup truck wreck in Breathitt County.

Kentucky State Police said Earl Watkins Jr. of Jackson was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m. Wednesday at the Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson, where he was taken after the crash.

Kimberly A. Watkins, 41, also of Jackson, was injured when the pickup ran off Ky. 1098 in the South Fork community just before 9 p.m. Wednesday. She was driving the truck, according to the Hazard KSP post.

The Watkins' relationship was not immediately known.

State police said their 1991 Chevrolet truck was traveling east on Ky. 1098 when Kimberly Watkins apparently lost control on a curve. The truck hit a tree after leaving the highway, police said.

Kimberly Watkins was treated at the medical center in Jackson, then flown to University of Kentucky Chandler hospital. She was in critical condition Thursday night.

Seat belts were not in use in the wreck, and toxicology reports are pending, police said Thursday.

An investigation is continuing.
