One of Kentucky's top football signees in the class of 2014 won't be suiting up for the Wildcats this fall.
Ohio safety Mike Edwards announced Wednesday that he will have surgery on his shoulder later this month "and won't be able to play or enroll this semester." Edwards missed some of his senior season with a shoulder injury.
If healthy, he would have been a big addition to UK's roster. Rivals.com and Scout.com considered him a four-star prospect, and Rivals analyst Josh Helmholdt told the Herald-Leader in February that "the talent is there" for Edwards to make an immediate impact for the Cats.
The secondary is an area of need for UK, and Edwards expected to compete for playing time as a freshman.
"They told me it's up to me to take the job," he said in February. "I expect to come in and take the spot and start right away. Just come in and compete — that's what I'm going to do."
Edwards is also a cousin and former teammate of offensive lineman George Brown, who is one of UK's top remaining recruiting targets in the class of 2015. Brown is planning to announce his college decision July 25.
Though he won't be playing for the Cats this fall, Edwards remains committed to UK. "I am still a Wildcat though," he tweeted Wednesday.
Media Days lineup
The Southeastern Conference announced the lineup for next week's SEC Media Days festivities Wednesday.
Representing Kentucky at the event will be senior defensive ends Bud Dupree and Za'Darius Smith, and junior offensive tackle Jordan Swindle.
Coach Mark Stoops will also be there to address the media. The UK contingent will be interviewed Thursday.
