Firefighters at the scene of a lumber fire behind the Lowe's on Richmond Road on July 9, 2014.

Black smoke could be seen for miles Wednesday evening as firefighters extinguished flames behind Lowe's on Richmond Road.

At 6:19, firefighters were called to a structure fire, but they were rerouted to deal with lumber burning behind the store, Maj. C.J. Haunz said.

The fire was handled quickly, but it created clouds of thick black smoke that could been seen from downtown. The fire destroyed a fence and a steel railing used to store the lumber.

Haunz said the fire appeared suspicious because no accidental factors that could be identified. Fire investigators were working to determine the exact cause. Firefighters were at the store until about 8:15 p.m.
